Both chambers read the bill three times and passed it on 23 July 2024. It adds a new subsection 18(8a) so that an Inspector-General of Police remains in office to the end of the term stated in the appointment letter; Senator Ahmad Lawan argued in debate that this could reduce accountability. Daily Trust reported in September 2024 that the President had approved an extension of IGP Kayode Egbetokun's tenure based on the amended Act, but civil society groups asked whether the President had actually assented to the bill. This dataset could not confirm assent.
