Privacy Policy
What we collect, why we collect it, and what you can make us delete.
Draft pending legal review. This page describes what the platform does today, accurately and in full. It has not yet been reviewed against the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation by a lawyer. That review is outstanding and must happen before public launch.
What we collect
Name and email address
To create your account and sign you in.
You type them at sign-up.
Voter's card number (PVC)Sensitive
So an administrator can check it against the INEC register before you endorse aspirants, sign petitions, or propose civic actions.
You type it at sign-up or on the verification page.
State, and optionally a handle and short bio
To show your civic activity in the right jurisdiction and attribute it to you publicly.
You type them at sign-up or on your profile.
What you do on the platform
Endorsements, petition signatures, bill reactions, manifesto votes, comments, proposals, protest attendance and project contributions are the record the platform exists to keep.
Each time you take one of those actions.
A push notification token, if you allow notifications
So we can send the alerts you agreed to receive. It identifies a device, not a person, and is deleted when you sign out of that device.
Only after you grant notification permission in the mobile app.
What is public
Become is a public record. Your name, handle, state and civic actions — the petitions you sign, the bills you back, the proposals you write — are visible to anyone using the platform. That is the point of it: an endorsement nobody can see holds nobody to account.
Your email address, password and PVC number are never public. The PVC number is visible only to administrators reviewing your verification, and it is never shown on your profile, in search, or to other citizens.
Who else sees it
- Our hosting and database providers, because the data has to live somewhere. They process it on our instructions and do not use it for their own purposes.
- Expo's push service, if you enable notifications — it receives the device token and the text of each notification in order to deliver it.
- Plugg, only if you choose to link the two accounts using your African Commons ID. Linking is something you do deliberately; it never happens automatically.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with advertisers, parties, campaigns or candidates.
On your phone
The mobile app keeps a copy of pages you have already opened so they still work when you lose signal. That copy lives only on your device, expires after a week, and is erased when you sign out — phones get shared, and the next person to open the app should not find your session in it. Your profile is never cached.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account and the personal data attached to it. Write to us through the contact page and we will respond.
Deleting your account removes your name, email, PVC number, bio and device tokens. Where an action was part of a public tally — a petition's signature count, an endorsement total — the count remains, without you attached to it. A record that could be silently unwound afterwards would not be a record.
Changes
If what we collect changes, this page changes with it before the change ships.
