Screened and cleared as the NDC's sole presidential aspirant on 19–20 May 2026, then adopted as its candidate after the party's nationwide primaries on 30 May 2026, with INEC officials observing; he named Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as running mate.
Party registration: on 26 June 2026 a Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside its own December 2025 order directing INEC to register the NDC; the Court of Appeal reversed that ruling on 18 September 2026 by a 2–1 majority, leaving the NDC's registration in place.
Abayomi Arabambi, whom the Labour Party says it suspended and expelled, has filed Freedom of Information suits at the Federal High Court, Abuja against WAEC, UNN and NYSC seeking their records on certificates issued to Obi. He says he is not asking the court to rule on whether the certificates are genuine.
After the Supreme Court restored the Electoral Act 2026 provisions on party membership registers and nomination methods (Sections 77(5)–(7) and 84(2)) in late September 2026, The Nation reported that observers had raised questions about Obi's nomination, since he joined the NDC on 3 May 2026. No candidate-specific ruling had been reported.
As reported up to the date of this record. A court may since have ruled.
