The Adamawa governor used his prerogative of mercy to mark the 66th Independence anniversary, on the advice of the state's mercy committee.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has pardoned nine inmates serving various terms and commuted one death sentence to life imprisonment to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary, The Sun reports.

Those pardoned include Abubakar Dajo of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Jos, and Zabadi Ayuba and Salvation Nyamso of the Numan Custodial Centre, along with six others held in custodial centres across the state. The death sentence of Saidu Abdullahi, held at the Yola Old Custodial Centre, was commuted to life imprisonment.

The governor acted on the advice of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, under Section 212(1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution. The paper said the Nigerian Correctional Service had reportedly concluded the legal formalities, and the decision takes immediate effect.

In his Independence Day message, Fintiri acknowledged the economic and social difficulties facing Nigerians, commended the military and other security agencies, and assured residents that no project started by his administration would be abandoned.
