Police say heavy rain flooded a pit at Nahuta village; NEMA has separately put 15 states on flood red alert.

Nine miners have died in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State after floodwater filled the pit they were working in at Nahuta village, Gwana District, Daily Trust reports.

Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib said the miners were contract workers at a pit known as Pit Three when heavy rainfall flooded it. The incident was reported to police by Kasim Abdulsalam, purchase manager of Zurfi Mining Company in Nahuta. Some workers were rescued, but one victim was electrocuted and confirmed dead at General Hospital, Kashere, in Akko LGA of Gombe State.

The remaining eight miners were brought out of the pit at about 6:20am on 28 September and confirmed dead at the same hospital. Police named the victims, aged between 23 and 40, from Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kogi and Kebbi states. The bodies were released to relatives and an investigation is continuing.

In the same report, Daily Trust said the National Emergency Management Agency has placed 15 states on flood red alert. Bauchi is not on that list.
