The police's first detailed account follows criticism from Amnesty International; the drug allegations are not in the charges filed.
The Borno State Police Command says five men arrested in Maiduguri over T-shirts reading "Tinubu Must Go" were also found with suspected cannabis and other items, Premium Times reports.
In a statement on Wednesday by spokesperson Nahum Daso, police said officers on patrol met the men at about 6pm on 25 September near the West End Roundabout. Police said they recovered 15 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, a shisha pot, a pair of scissors and two of the T-shirts.
Charges seen by Premium Times accuse the men of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbing public peace and thuggery under the Borno State Penal Code. They allege the men printed the T-shirts with intent to breach the peace. The suspected drugs are not mentioned in the charges, and police did not explain why.
Amnesty International has said wearing a T-shirt that opposes the President is not a crime and called for the men's release. Police said they are non-partisan and that the court should decide the case on the evidence.
