A source said two commercial buses were stopped near Umunoha in Mbaitoli LGA on Thursday; police had not commented at the time.

Armed men suspected to be bandits reportedly kidnapped travellers on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday morning, Vanguard reports.

A source who asked not to be named said the attackers stopped two commercial buses heading to Owerri from Onitsha near Umunoha. The exact number of people taken had not been confirmed when the report was filed.

According to the source, the attackers took advantage of slow-moving traffic caused by cattle crossing the expressway. The source also alleged that a man and his daughter abducted on the same road about three weeks earlier were freed after a N29 million ransom was paid; Vanguard said this could not be independently verified.

The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, had not responded to enquiries about the incident at the time of the report.
