Kebbi NLC disputes ADC governorship candidate Malami's pledges to workers

The state labour chairman called a N110,000 minimum wage pledge 'a mere political statement', saying Kebbi workers already earn N75,000.

The Kebbi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has disputed claims made in an Independence Day address by Abubakar Chika Malami, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Vanguard reports.

According to the NLC, Malami pledged prompt payment of gratuities and pensions, a N110,000 minimum wage, public transport for workers and workers' housing. State NLC chairman Murtala Usman said in a statement on Thursday that the state government under Governor Nasir Idris had already addressed these issues.

Usman said workers receive N75,000, above the N70,000 federal minimum wage, and called the N110,000 pledge "nothing but a mere political statement". He said gratuities had not been delayed, that the government had approved more than 700 housing units for workers, and that a Kebbi State Transport Authority had recently been launched.

He said the union usually avoids public exchanges with politicians but responded because the issues concern workers' welfare. Vanguard's report did not include a response from Malami. The governorship election is on 6 February 2027.
