The governor acknowledged rising food and transport costs and asked residents to vote peacefully and in large numbers in 2027.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu used his eighth and final Independence Day address as governor to urge residents to re-elect President Bola Tinubu and to elect his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as governor in 2027, News Central reports.
Speaking on Thursday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, near where the Union Jack was lowered in 1960, Sanwo-Olu noted that Nigeria has had 27 uninterrupted years of constitutional democracy.
He acknowledged that recent economic reforms had raised the cost of food and transport for Lagos households. "I've asked a great deal of ordinary families," he said, adding that the focus should be on making sure the reforms improve living standards.
Turning to the elections, he declared support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose governorship candidate Hamzat became in May. "Vote peaceably, vote in your numbers, vote with your eyes open," the governor told residents. He also said he wanted to leave behind institutions that outlast any individual governor.
