The capital part of the 2025 budget will now run to the end of 2026, the fourth time its implementation period has been extended.

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025, which moves the deadline for implementing the 2025 budget's capital component from 30 September to 31 December 2026, Premium Times reports.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced the assent in a statement on Wednesday. The Senate and the House of Representatives both passed the amendment on Tuesday, 29 September. The statement said the extension gives ministries, departments and agencies more time to finish ongoing capital projects and ensures money already appropriated is spent.

This is the fourth extension. The capital component was first due to close on 31 December 2025, then moved to 31 March, 30 June and 30 September 2026. Lawmakers and economic analysts have repeatedly criticised the practice.

In December 2025, while presenting the 2026 budget, the President promised that all capital liabilities from previous years would be funded and closed by 31 March 2026 and that Nigeria would run a single budget from April. The latest extension means that timeline has not been met.
