Federal, state and local government workers are told to stay off work from 2 to 4 October over petrol prices, a wage award and wage talks.
Public sector unions under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) have directed federal, state and local government employees across the country to begin a three-day warning strike, Vanguard reports.
A circular dated 1 October and signed by the council's National Secretary (Trade Union side), Olowoyo Gbenga, says the strike runs from midnight of Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October 2026. Member unions include the Nigerian Civil Service Union, the Medical and Health Workers Union, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.
The council wrote to the President on 21 September asking for petrol to be cut to N500 per litre, an immediate wage award, and the start of talks on a new national minimum wage of not less than N500,000 from 2027. It set 30 September as the deadline.
One JNPSNC leader told Vanguard the unions were "deeply disappointed" that the President's Independence Day address did not respond to those demands. The paper said the Nigeria Labour Congress had given tacit backing to the action in its own Independence Day statement.
