The ADC presidential candidate used an Independence Day address to set out election, fuel subsidy and cost-of-living pledges for 2027.

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has promised that, if elected in 2027, he will end election rigging and make the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) more independent, Premium Times reports.

Speaking at the ADC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday to mark the 66th Independence anniversary, he promised prompt publication of results from every polling unit and said anyone caught buying votes or altering results would be prosecuted, whatever their party. He urged voters to protect their votes, reject intimidation and ask candidates for plans that can be measured. "This country is yours," he said.

On the economy, Atiku proposed a capped and budgeted production subsidy tied to verified fuel refined in Nigeria, including by modular refineries, with imported petrol excluded. He said the costs would be published and the payments independently audited.

He also called for the rule of law to be applied fairly, saying that keeping Sheikh Sani Khalifa Zaria and Nasir El-Rufai in detention raised due-process concerns, and that Nnamdi Kanu's right to appeal his conviction should be respected. His running mate is Rotimi Amaechi.
