The NDC presidential candidate cited poverty, out-of-school and youth unemployment figures in a critique of the APC government.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), used his Independence Day message on Thursday to accuse the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of failing to reverse poverty, insecurity, unemployment and hunger, Vanguard reports.

Obi said more than 140 million Nigerians live in poverty, over 80 million children are out of school and over 35 million young people are unemployed. He said Nigeria had moved from 109th to 115th on a hunger ranking and cited food organisations' projections that 40 million people could face extreme hunger by the end of the year. He also referred to the recent deaths of 37 young people.

"Today, Nigeria is the worst place to be born," the former Anambra State governor said, adding that the country has some of the world's worst infant and maternal mortality rates. The figures are as stated by Obi.

His message came hours after President Bola Tinubu's broadcast, in which the President said "the emergency treatment is over" and that the country was entering an "age of prosperity".
