In his 66th Independence Day broadcast, the President said economic policy will now centre on jobs, enterprise and local production.

President Bola Tinubu used his Independence Day broadcast on Thursday to say Nigeria is moving from a period of economic reform into what he called an "age of prosperity", Premium Times reports.

He said his government will put jobs, enterprise and industrial growth at the centre of policy. Plans he listed include using the country's gas to power new industries, backing businesses that revive factories in industrial centres, extending digital connectivity to communities that have been left out, and investing in the skills employers need.

The President pointed to the Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) as a way for working Nigerians to buy vehicles, solar systems and digital devices on credit rather than saving for years first.

He acknowledged that some families still struggle to pay for food, school fees, medical bills and transport to work, and said lifting people out of poverty "will take time" and require sustained growth year after year.

The reforms he referred to, introduced since 2023, include the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the exchange rate. "The age of reform has done its work. Now begins the age of prosperity," he said.
