Six others were critically injured when aides began sharing N10,000 handouts in Minna; a civil society group wants an independent probe.

Three women died and six other people were left in critical condition after a stampede at Government House in Minna, the Niger State capital, on Tuesday evening, Daily Trust reports.

The dead were named as Maryam Haruna Yakubu, a casual worker at Government House, and Dije Gambo and her daughter Hulaira Abubakar, both displaced from Allawa community in Shiroro LGA. Two of the injured were referred to the IBB Specialist Hospital.

Daily Trust said some youths had planned a protest over the deaths of 37 artisanal miners while they were held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Governor Mohammed Umar Bago reportedly invited youths to Government House to address them. Others arrived after hearing that N10,000 would be shared, and the stampede followed when aides brought out cash.

The governor's Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, said a statement would follow, while police had not responded by press time. The Blue Resolution Initiative, a Minna-based group, called for an independent investigation and safer relief distribution. A similar crush occurred at Government House in November 2023.
