Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted absolute pardon to 130 inmates and commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary, Premium Times reports.
A statement on Thursday by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, said the governor acted after consulting the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
The four whose death sentences were commuted are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi. Those pardoned include Kamshine Gomerep, Maju Sajen, Jan Thomas and Gody Victor.
In his Independence message, Mutfwang urged Nigerians to protect the country's unity and said "every citizen has a role to play" in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous nation. He said his administration remains committed to a Plateau where residents can pursue their aspirations in peace and security.
