The Taraba governor's Independence broadcast also gave officials seven days to produce a completion timetable for the collapsed Namnai Bridge.

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has approved N2.5 billion in intervention funds and pardoned 24 inmates, announcing both in his Independence Day broadcast on Thursday, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Of the total, N500 million goes to the six-month TARABA CARES poverty relief programme, running from October 2026 to March 2027 for indigent households, widows, persons with disabilities and the elderly. Another N1 billion goes to the Taraba State Youth Development Agency for skills and enterprise support, and N1 billion to relief and livelihoods in crisis-hit communities in Karim Lamido LGA and other affected areas. "Every single naira must serve its intended purpose," Kefas said.

He gave the Ministry of Works and the Secretary to the State Government seven days to agree a realistic completion timetable for the collapsed Namnai Bridge on the Jalingo-Wukari federal highway with the North East Development Commission, the federal ministry and the contractor.

Responding to debate over the state's debt, Kefas said borrowing is not automatically a sign of failure and that "our books must be open to lawful scrutiny". A summit on regulating artisanal mining is planned for 3 October.
