154 reciters took part in Yobe's 36th Qur'anic competition; the governor said both religious and modern schooling will get investment.

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has said his government will keep promoting Islamic and Arabic education alongside conventional schooling, The Trumpet reports.

Buni, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mohammed Goje, spoke on Wednesday in Damaturu at the close of the 36th Annual Qur'anic Recitation Competition, organised by the Yobe State Arabic and Islamic Education Board. He said the government would invest in educational and religious institutions and strengthen the capacity of teachers.

The board's Executive Secretary, Malam Umar Mohammed, said 154 participants took part in the five-day competition. Abubakar Usman of Potiskum won the male category and Amina Sa'idu Haruna of Nangere the female category; each received N500,000.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Associate Professor Idriss Adam, said establishing the Mai Mala Buni Integrated College would further widen access to both conventional and Islamic education in the state.
